Et tu, Brute?

Even the best of friends can stab us.

“Et tu, Brute?”

It means “Even you, Brutus?”

Julius Caesar utters these words as he is being stabbed to death, having recognized his friend Brutus among his assassins. When Caesar sees his dearest friend Brutus amongst the conspirators, he is very hurt and prefers to die.

Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman who lived between 100 BC to 44BC. He played an instrumental role in the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.

After winning several wars, Julius Caesar became very popular and powerful.

Some people were jealous of Caesar’s growing power and feared he might become a dictator. Cassius hatches a conspiracy to murder Caesar.

He wins over Brutus in this conspiracy because Brutus is the most trusted and respected man in Rome.

After the assassination of Caesar, one of his friends, Antony, succeeds in motivating people to raise a revolt against Cassius and Brutus.

Be loyal to a friend, but at heart, be only loyal to yourself.

Antony, a friend of Caesar shows his love for Caesar, and swears his revenge to him.

He says, “Over thy wounds now do I prophesy, — ” a curse shall light upon the limbs of men; domestic fury and civil strife.”

Antony cannot be doing this for the show because he is alone on stage.

He truly believes what he is saying.

It is one of several plays written by Shakespeare based on true events from Roman history.
