The False Optimism of David Brooks

by Paul Jones

David Brooks, the Canadian-born, Jewish intellectual who writes regularly for “The New York Times,” had an article in the Op-Ed pages on June 21, 2019 titled “Your Daily Dose of Optimism!” He starts by reflecting back on the harsh living conditions of his grandfather, Bernard Levy, who grew up in the Lower East Side of New York City in the 1890’s when life in the tenements was extremely harsh, yet went on to become a lawyer after attending the public schools of the city.

He goes on to point out that things are much different now since “…there is no longer a single American spine of the nation. Mainline Protestantism is no longer the dominant religion and cultural force. The WASP establishment no longer rules the roost. There is no white majority in our kindergartens, and soon there will be no white majority in our society.”

He sees that “Now we’re multipolar. We’re all minorities now.” He recognizes the danger of this and how it could eventually “blow us to smithereens,” but then finds comfort in the words of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who reinterprets the words of Jeremiah for Jews in exile in Biblical times for all minority groups living nowadays, saying that they should exhibit “…aggressive interaction without an attempt to be hegemonic.”

Reading this took me aback because for someone to assert that the Jews haven’t tried to be hegemonic and control things is to totally ignore history. Obviously the reason that there is no longer a white majority is principally due to their concerted effort over time to “pull the rug out from under” the entire social and cultural structure through orchestrating the Immigration Act of 1965 which did away with restricting immigration from non-white areas of the world, along with the push to overthrow the system of legal segregation in the South and an overall program of pushing for miscegenation through their control of almost all aspects of culture since the end of W.W. II.

Following this false image of the benign and non-hegemonic Jew, Brooks states that “In a world of radical pluralism, we are all Jews. We have no choice but to build a mass multicultural democracy, a society that has no dominant center but is a collection of creative minorities.” He sees young people in these times as more and more being able to embody this concept, with so many mixtures of races and backgrounds emerging from the cultural milieu being promoted and this gives him optimism for the future.

But can Brooks be so naïve as to believe that there is not going to remain a “top dog” in all of this mess, and that while in the past whites were in this position, now it’s obviously the Jewish Power Structure which is wielding the power? At the same time, look at what is happening as far as Whiteness Studies in education and how from Kindergarten through higher education white youth are being fed a steady dose of white guilt for their ancestors which is getting worse as the percentage of whites going through the system gets smaller.

Those of us who are more realistic about the realities of what our people are facing in the United States and all over the West realize that this dream world of the future envisioned by Brooks is really going to turn out to be a nightmare, and that out of this is inevitably going to come the creation of white ethno-states. Maybe if the grandparents of modern-day Jewish intellectuals hadn’t been so aggressively hegemonic when they first arrived to the Lower East Side we wouldn’t be in the predicament we are in now, but that certainly wasn’t the case.

Great article, Mr. Jones! I really enjoy your analysis , and appreciate your work.

David Brooks is a subversive, despicable elitist who is so high on his own supply he can’t see that he is living in a rose-tinted bubble.
